Flags for Dale

Phoenix resident Dale Richardson, a Marine Corps veteran, was a recent victim of the senseless crime of theft and criminal damage.  One may immediately think he had a bike stolen or a window broken, but this was not the case.  This crime struck more to heart of who Mr. Richardson is and what he represents to his country and community.  Dale awoke on Monday morning of February 4th, 2013 to discover that suspect(s) unknown had done the unthinkable by pulling down the 20 foot flag pole in his front yard and stealing both his American and Marine Corps flags.   That evening AZFamily.com (3 On Your Side) reported on this horrific story, in which Mr. Richardson stated, “I'm what you would call an extreme patriot," explaining why he joined the Marine Corps while still in high school.  His wife, Annie, commented the flags represent the family's love of country and her husband's love of the Corps, and they'll replace both flags within the next day or so.

This story garnered the immediate attention and compassion of Detectives Chris Jansen and Eric Carpenter, who are members of the Crimes Against Children Case Review Task Force.  Chris and Eric acted on their sense of compassion and purchased a new American and Marine Corps flags to replace those stolen from Mr. Richardson.  They presented Mr. and Mrs. Richardson with the new flags, and were both emotionally touched and appreciative by Chris and Eric’s generosity and compassion.  Detectives Jansen and Carpenter said they felt compelled to do this because a veteran doesn't deserve to have his flags stolen, and they only wanted to show him some respect and gratitude for serving our country.

Flags for Dale On Thursday, February 7, 2013, Mr. Richardson and his family held a flag raising ceremony at their residence, in which Detectives Jansen, Carpenter and other Department employees attended to commemorate the raising of the new flags.  The ceremony left those in attendance with an overwhelming since of patriotism, pride, and gratitude for Dale Richardson, and the countless other veterans who have honorably served our country as members of the United States military.

This opportunity for members of the Phoenix Police Department to publicly thank Mr. Richardson and share in his love of country and community would not have been possible had it not been for the compassion, respect and gratitude Detectives Jansen and Carpenters exhibited to Mr. Richardson and his family.  Their professionalism and actions are in keeping with the Department’s mission statement of Nobility in Policing, the Spirit of Service and to Nurture and Protect Democracy.
