Meet the supervisor

Founder and CEO Kirk Johnson

As an advocate of personal and professional development, we make it a point to provide opportunities for everyone that works and/or volunteers with SOUNDS Academy to "leave better than they arrived". This includes development opportunities for our students, to our parents, to our staff, to our Board of Directors. Providing the opportunities for people to be better versions of themselves is what motivates and excites us here at SOUNDS Academy. We focus ourselves on developing the Character Values; specifically Creativity, Leadership, Perseverance, Resilience, and Teamwork. Students Workers that work with SOUNDS Academy will do far more than making copies, taking notes, and making "coffee runs". Student Workers will get the opportunity to learn from other staff members, interact with music professionals; specifically our Teaching Artists and Local Musicians that we work with, collaborate with members of our Committees and Board of Directors through special projects, and lead Team and Staff meetings. There are also opportunities to interact with the dynamic and diverse schools and communities of Metro-Phoenix through community events such as our Instrument Pettings Zoos and two signature fundraising events; The SpeakEasy and The Benefit Concert. Through the years I have seen that investing in the youth and community members motivate them to invest in themselves and then ultimately return to invest back in the community which invested in them. I feel that this is the ultimate community benefit since it helps to improve each of our zip codes - hence helping to improve the city, state, and the world!

Professional Biography
Kirk Johnson is a musician, performer, and educator who believes that the zip code of a child should not dictate their access to music education. Beginning his musical journey in Boston, he learned to play the violin and viola, played in orchestras, touring countries like Italy, Mexico, and Cuba.
