Calling all local writers—the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and Deer Valley Unified School District are looking for a practicing writer to help develop creative writing exercises, activities, and other resources for sixth grade students at Title I schools! The position is 8 hours a week from March 1 to May 15, 2022 with a stipend of up to $4,000. Writers of all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply.

Position Summary

Call for Writ​ers

The City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture is looking for an educational wri​ter-in-residence to pilot a new literary arts program in the schools for Spring 2022. Working in close collaboration with staff members at the Office of Arts and Culture and English Language Arts specialists at Title I schools in Deer Valley Unifi​ed School District, the educational writer-in-residence will help develop, administer, and evaluate a variety of exercises, lesson plans, resources, and tools to help sixth-grade students get engaged and excited about narrative writing in accordance with district standards and goals.​

Compensation and Commitment​

The educational writer-in-residence is a contracted position expected to work up to 8 hours a week from March 1 to May 15, 2022 meeting with teachers, developing curriculum, and instructing students. For this work, the writer will receive a stipend of $3,500 to $4,000 including mileage and travel. Pending any changes in district policy, the writer is expected to teach in-person at least one day a week. Instruction will take place in 15-to-20-minute blocks during regular school hours with one to three sections containing around 30 students each. Meetings with teachers and staff members may take place virtually. Materials and supplies will be provided by the City of Phoenix. Other details will be determined at the start of the program.


Who Can Apply?

Eligibility and Qualifications

The educational writer-in-residence should be a practicing writer with teaching or educational experiencein academic, community or other settings, ideally with youth. Examples of experience may include independent craft workshops, college courses, primary or secondary education, curriculum development, teaching artist engagements, and more. No publications or degrees in creative writing or related fields are required. While writers may practice in any genre, the focus is on narrative. Other art forms and disciplines may be incorporated into the curricul​um at the writer’s discretion. The writer will also need to pass a background check and obtain a fingerprint clearance card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
