Jim Campbell's Ruins of Light, was created to greet patrons of America West Arena (renamed Talking Stick Resort Arena) with an interactive video experience that merged live and taped video feeds and images.  The work's four steel columns of video screens stood in the arena's central food court from 1992 until 2002, when that portion of the arena was renovated, and the work removed. Campbell, an artist and engineer, created the software that merged unique sequences of imagery every day of the year. Each column also discreetly housed a video camera that “captured" and superimposed the viewer in a constantly changing flow of images from sports, classical sculpture, weather outside the arena, and desert landscapes. Images of the viewer were “frozen" in time, allowing viewers to see themselves in the moment.           ​
