Meejin Yoon's Shadow
Play is
a series of shade
structures, seating and landscaping at three sites along Roosevelt Street in the heart of the Roosevelt Arts District in downtown Phoenix. Solar-powered canopies draw renewable
energy from the sun to light the space at night. The
array of seven interconnected structures at the Roosevelt Street triangle
between 3rd and 4th Streets provides a unique outdoor gathering space.
Individual shade structures with seating are also located on the north side of
Roosevelt Street at 1st and
2nd Streets. The overall street improvement
narrowed Roosevelt Street, widened sidewalks, and added bicycle lanes, parking,
trees and landscaping.
The shade structures were fabricated in
Phoenix by Magnum Companies. The foundation and concrete work was constructed
by Talis Construction Corporation.
This public art project was commissioned by
the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture Public
Art Program with percent-for-art
funds from the Phoenix Streets and Water Capital Improvement Programs, in
partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, and the Arizona Department
of Transportation.
