Tucson artist Daniel Martin Diaz was commissioned by the Phoenix Office of Cultural Affairs
to design a terrazzo floor for the public entrance and community room at the Black Mountain Precinct station. Diaz drew inspiration for the floor's design from the beauty of the Sonoran desert surrounding the site. He based the floor medallions on the star-like geometry of barrel cacti. He derived the floor's pattern of 195 inlaid metal stars from the star-lit desert nights. He hopes the floor's vivid colors and elegant patterns encourage people to pause and think about the majestic natural beauty of the north Phoenix landscape.
