The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture's Public Art Digital Classroom continues in October with five new workshops will feature artists and curators taking you behind the scenes of public art projects, studio practices, and opportunities. Register and join us every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. for these live online workshops that include presentations by the artists and ample time for your questions! Can't make the live workshop? Don’t worry if you can’t make it to a workshop!  The LIVE lessons will be recorded posted permanently for continued viewing on the Office of Arts and Culture’s YouTube Page​. ​

The sessions were geared toward artists who have never done a city public art project or would like to brush up on basic software tools. The step-by-step overviews focused on the graphic editing and 3D modeling software commonly used to design and fabricate a wide range of public art projects. ​

Lesson 1 – Navigating Photoshop

Would you like to improve the artwork photos you take to submit for competitions and exhibitions? This workshop provides an overview of ways that Adobe Photoshop can be used to edit and make your photos look their best. It includes demonstrations to make the techniques easier to understand and use.

Lesson 2 – Navigating Illustrator 

Ever wonder what the difference is between raster and vector graphic files? This lesson will demystify that by walking you through the process of turning photos of your artwork into file types that can be used by fabricators.

Lesson 3 – Navigating SketchUp

One of the greatest challenges for public artists is showing how a design concept and its surroundings will look when a project is done. Digital tools can play an important role in that. This workshop will demonstrate how to use SketchUp to create 3D models of artworks and their sites.

Lesson 4 – Navigating Vectorworks

Ever see great public and wonder how it was made? This lesson will demonstrate how studio artists can convert their design files into the shop drawings used by fabricators.

Thursday August 6th at 10am
Lesson 1 – Applications and Selection Process.

Have you ever wanted to apply for a public art project, but don’t know how?  This lesson will cover how to respond to Calls to Artists with the City of Phoenix Office of Arts + Culture. We will include lots of tips such has how to read an RFQ (Request for Qualifications), Photograph tips, and the CaFE application system.

Lesson 2 – Contracts

Entering into a City contract can be daunting.  This lesson will help to demystify the process by walking through the different types of city public art contracts and covering important things to consider.  This lesson will not offer legal advice, but we will provide resources for artists!

Lesson 3 – Design Phase

Unlike studio work, public art projects are not solo acts. They can take many forms, involving many people and needs. This session will walk artists through a typical design development process.  We will discuss the types of design projects and team, and what to consider in developing a successful design.

Thursday August 27th at 10am
Lesson 4 – Fabrication/Construction

Join this lesson to take a general look at how public art projects are built – both by artists and by contractors or subcontractors. We will talk about these two different approaches, and how to determine which is best for a project. ​​
