Founded in 1975 as the Chicano Art movement was sweeping across the west and southwest, Xico – formerly Xicanindio Artists Coalition - has evolved over the past five decades into a leading cultural institution in Arizona serving Latinx and Indigenous artists. Today, through artist cultivation and promotion, youth arts education, and community arts and cultural partnerships, Xico’s work continues.

Xico serves the community through opportunities for artists to develop professionally, gain exposure and recognition, and promote their cultural identity. The community gains access to local artists through exhibitions, activities, and festivals.

About this Student Worker Position

The Studio Assistant will work closely with our Program Manager and Director of Curatorial Services to support content creation for social media and assist with workshops and exhibitions. This role offers a unique opportunity to immerse deeply in our creative community. The student worker will contribute to our mission of empowering communities through arts and culture, and develop valuable skills in a supportive and inclusive workplace.


Specific responsibilities

This role encompasses three key areas: Content Creation, Workshops, and Exhibition Assistance.

Responsibilities:

**Content Creation:**

- Conduct weekly social media check-ins.
- Create content for social media, including videos, photos, and reels at events, exhibitions, and workshops (time permitting).
- Post on various social media platforms.
- Utilize Canva or other basic platforms for content creation.


**Workshops:**

- Prepare the studio for workshops, such as Printmaking and Acrylic workshops.
  - Set up materials like inks, brushes, and tables.
  - Clean Monosilk screens.
  - Organize supplies and inventory.
  - Maintain studio cleanliness and order.

**Exhibition Assistance:**

- Assist with exhibition installations and tear-downs.
- Store artwork appropriately.
- Print and label tags for artwork.
- Help organize exhibition spreadsheets and track artwork sales.
- Attend exhibition openings, closings, and meet-the-artist events.

 

Desired qualifications

- Passion for Arts and Culture: Strong interest in arts and culture sector and a desire to be actively involved in the community.

- Social Media Skills: Proficiency in creating and managing content for social media platforms. Familiarity with Canva or similar tools is a plus.

- Organizational Abilities: Excellent organizational skills for managing workshop setups, studio maintenance, and exhibition logistics.

- Technical Skills: Ability to handle various workshop materials and tools, including setting up inks, brushes, and printmaking equipment.

- Detail-Oriented: Keen attention to detail, especially for tasks like cleaning screens, organizing supplies, and maintaining inventory.

- Event Participation: Willingness to attend and assist at art events, exhibitions, and workshops.

- Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with artists, visitors, and team members.

- Adaptability: Flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and adjust to changing priorities.

- Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with the Program Manager, Director of Curatorial Services, and other team members.

- Reliability: Dependable and committed to maintaining a consistent presence in the studio.

- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds comfortably. (i.e., cleaning screens, exhibition installation)

This experience aligns with my professional growth by expanding our outreach and enhancing program effectiveness. The student worker will contribute to our organization by bringing fresh perspectives and energy, benefiting our community by promoting inclusivity and celebrating our rich cultural heritage.

As an Indigenous Chicana artist, I passionately explore identity, cultural awareness, and decolonization through art. My work bridges cultural backgrounds to foster understanding and land connection. I believe in the art's transformative power to empower communities. In management, I emphasize creativity, collaboration, and valuing every voice in a supportive environment.

About the program

The Phoenix ArtCorps​​

The Phoenix ArtCorps is a student employment program from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture  that seeks to provide students with​ the comprehensive skills, mentorship, and experience ​they need to launch their arts and culture careers. Over the course of the 2024-2025 academic cycle​, each student works 400 hours for $17/hr (around 15 to 20 hours a week), with additional stipends and professional development opportunities. To apply, students must be current or recently graduated undergraduate students at a community college, university, or other institution of higher education based in Phoenix (or live in Phoenix themselves). Applicants must be at least 18 years old. There are no other enrollment requirements. Students do not need to be majoring in the arts or similar fields to apply.
