Nationally recognized for our comprehensive approach to wellness, the Phoenix Fire Department Health Center has been providing state-of-the art care to firefighters since 1987. The history of the Health Center reflects a group of dedicated professionals who have consistently served the well being of Phoenix Fire Department members. It is the intent of the Health Center to help restore the health of any department member who has been subjected to injury, illness, or exposure. It is also the intent of the Health Center to strengthen individuals so that they can withstand both the physical and emotional insult they encounter on the job. To that end, specialized programs have been developed to address basic health and wellness issues, industrial injuries, exposure incidents and behavioral health.
Fire Service Joint Labor Management -- Most people are familiar with the story of the three little pigs. Each little piggy sought protection from the big bad wolf and decided to build a house. The only house left standing was the house with the strongest foundation… the one made of brick. What’s the moral of the story? Build rock solid firefighters. Well, maybe not that extreme. But when the IAFF and IAFC came together the endeavor was the same if you strengthen the foundation of the fire department, the firefighter, the whole house will be able to withstand years of stress associated with the job, leading to a more healthy and productive career and retirement.
In 1997 the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) joined together to develop an overall wellness system that focused on positive, progressive wellness improvement. The implementation of the Wellness/Fitness Initiative has been one of the most significant commitments to the individual firefighter in the history of the fire service.
