The city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is reminding motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists to stay safe on Halloween by following these tips from the city of Phoenix and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

For Drivers

  • Slow down and anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic. Watch for children walking on roads, medians and curbs.

  • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

  • Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

  • Enter and exit driveways carefully.

  • Don't pass stopped vehicles because the driver might be dropping off children.

  • Never drink and drive –  have a designated driver or an alternate means of transportation.

For Trick-or-Treaters

  • Stay visible by carrying a flashlight or attaching glow sticks to the front and back of your costume.

  • Before crossing a street, stop at the curb or edge of the road and look left, right and left again to be sure cars are not coming. Continue to check for traffic while in the street.

  • Walk – never run – from house to house or across the road.

  • Never cross a road between parked cars.

  • Cross the street only at corners and crosswalks.

  • When crossing at an intersection with a traffic light, be sure to watch for turning cars. Obey all pedestrian signals.

  • Walk on sidewalks whenever possible. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the far edge of the road facing traffic.

For Parents

  • Adults should always accompany children to supervise trick-or-treat activities.

  • Teach children to “stop, look left-right and left again and listen" before they cross the street.

  • Stay visible by carrying a flashlight or glow sticks.

  • Decorate costumes with reflective tape on the front and back to be more visible.

  • Make sure that costumes, hats or masks do not impede vision, walking or driving ability.
