The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.

Jan. 15: Arizona MLK Awards Breakfast "Living the Dream"...
The Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee will celebrate its 30th year of promoting cultural diversity, awareness and unity as it seeks to involve all Arizonans in recognizing the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the contributions he left to the world in his quest for quality for all people. The MLK Annual Awards Breakfast will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Sheraton Grand Phoenix located at 322 N 3rd Street in Phoenix. Doors open at 6:30 AM and the Program begins at 7:00 AM. Jan 15: Networking Luncheon: "Creating Unity to Eliminate Poverty and Hunger in Our Community "
On Friday, January 15, 2016 Espiritu Schools will host a community event on the Bill Bidwill Football Field. This event is designed to bring together a diverse group of individuals who will celebrate unity and bring attention to the need to serve the poor and hungry. Reyes Maria Ruiz Leadership Academy, an Espiritu School, along with co-sponsors; Spirit Mission, Plaza de Las Culturas, and Project America Development Company, will have a two week long can food drive to donate all proceeds to the St Mary's Food Bank. Upon the conclusion of the two week food drive, Reyes Maria Ruiz Leadership Academy will host a Friday afternoon networking/community awareness luncheon for students, community members, and local leaders to begin a dialogue on how we can make a difference and change the community. As an active community member, we would like to invite you to the Espiritu Schools outdoor Luncheon on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Noon.

Jan. 16: MLK Candlelight Scholarship Ceremony and Concert
The MLK Candlelight Scholarship Ceremony and Concert event will be held at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1401 E. Jefferson Street in Phoenix on Sunday, January 17 at 6 PM.
Jan 18: Phoenix Parks & Recreation MLK Day
Help make our city Parks shine while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by joining the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department for a community cleanup event at 7 locations along Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016. This is a great way to support community and Parks revitalization. Great opportunity for families and groups. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department builds healthy communities through parks, programs and partnerships. Suitable for all ages. Group volunteering allowed Contact Jackie Johnson, 602-262-6439, jackie.johnson@phoenix.gov. Clean-up areas are located along Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. (Broadway Rd.), which include Hayden Park, Nueve Park, Mong Mini Park, Lenang Mini Park, Eotote Mini Park, Esteban Park and Eastlake Park.

Jan 18: Sierra Club MLK Day Habitat Restoration
2016 Sierra Club project on the Rio Salado may include tree planting, clean up and removal of invasive plants along the river. This is a family oriented event so all are welcome to share in the legacy of Dr. King by serving with your community. We will gather for sign-in, commencement and instructions - from 8 to 8:45 AM. Coffee and light breakfast provided. Outdoor Afro and Sierra Club waivers will be provided at the event. (Minors under 18 must have their waivers signed by a parent or guardian to participate). Event should last about 3 hours. Bring a reusable water bottle with you. Please refrain from bringing plastic water bottles. We'll provide water to refill your water containers. You should wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals), long pants, and a hat. We suggest sun screen and a pair of work gloves. Spare gloves will be provided if needed.

Jan. 18: MLK March & Festival
Join us for the 2016 MLK March & Festival on Monday, January 18. The March will begin at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1401 E Jefferson Street in Phoenix. Assemble at 8:30 AM and March begins at 9:00 AM. The MLK Festival will be held from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Hance Park, 1202 N 3rd Street, Phoenix.
