The U.S. Census Bureau 2017 city population estimates show Phoenix gaining 24,036 new residents over 2016. The gain put Phoenix as the second-highest population-gaining city, around 200 less than list-topping San Antonio, Texas, which gained 24,208 over the year.
Phoenix now has a population of 1,626,078, and remains the fifth-largest city in America. Sixth-ranked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lost population The Census estimates U.S. city population as of July 1, 2017.
City of Phoenix's growth reflects continuing area population trends. Maricopa County was the fastest-growing U.S. county in 2017. The Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metro population passed San Francisco Bay Area to become the 11th-largest U.S. metro. At its current growth trend, the Valley will likely pass 10th-ranked Boston, Massachusetts and New Hampshire metro when 2018 population estimates are released.
All of the largest population gains among U.S. cities are in the Southeast and Western U.S.
Dallas, Texas, gained just under 19,000 new residents to rank third in growth, Forth Worth, Texas, was slightly less and in the number four position, and Los Angeles was the fifth-fastest growing city, gaining 18,600 year over year.

Phoenix's 2017 growth was less than the nation-leading 32,000 between 2015 and 2016.
Despite hurricane devastation in 2017, Houston, Texas, still gained population. Its 9,000 population increase was less than half the gains in 2016 over 2015.
