City Announces New Face Mask Requirements After CDC Eases Guidelines

February 28, 2022 9:00 AM

Today, the City of Phoenix updated its Face Mask Policy. Members of the public who are visiting a city facility with an appointment, can do so without having to wear a mask when Maricopa County is at a low or medium community risk level. This decision follows an announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which activated a new set of measures that will allow people who are healthy and living in counties where the coronavirus poses a low or medium community risk level, to stop wearing a face mask in public settings.

As of Feb. 28, 2022, Maricopa County is at a medium risk level, so effective immediately, a face mask will not be required for most people entering a city building. The exceptions to this change include locations that serve Aviation (Sky Harbor International Airport), Public Transit (ValleyMetro bus and light rail service), and the Municipal Court. The Aviation and Public Transit Departments must continue to adhere to other federal requirements and the Municipal Court must continue to adhere to requirements issued by the Arizona State Supreme and Maricopa County Superior Courts.

A medium risk level means in the last seven days, there have been fewer than 200 people (per 100,000) admitted to local hospitals for COVID-19. The new CDC guidance makes it clear that that despite the risk level, if you are immunocompromised or at high risk for severe illness, you should consult with your doctor before going into any public setting without a mask.
Although the City has updated the face mask policy, it is important to remember that COVID and other illnesses are still present, and no one should enter a city building with any symptoms of illness.

Appointments are still required at downtown City of Phoenix buildings. Online requests for City services are available at myPHX311. City Council meetings remain virtual with options to request to speak or comment online.

Staying up to date on vaccines and wearing masks can protect everyone from severe illness and they help reduce the potential impact to the local healthcare system. There are many convenient and local options to receive a free COVID-19 vaccine and/or booster shot. COVID-19 testing options also remain available.

It's important to stay up to date on the community risk level, as this will have a direct and immediate impact on the City's face mask policy. Should the risk level in Maricopa County increase to a high category, the City will reinstate face mask requirements.

You may continue to wear a face mask in City buildings if that is your personal preference.
