March 14, 2022 9:00 AM
Farmers in Phoenix are invited to apply for grants to help with their efforts in resilient and sustainable agriculture measures. The City of Phoenix's Office of Environmental Programs has $245,000 in grants available. The funding is meant to help private and non-profit farms that are interested in transitioning toward a more sustainable, resilient, equitable, and thriving food system.

Examples of resilient projects include, but are not limited to:
  • Food waste mitigation
  • Agrivoltaics
  • Soil health improvement
  • Water efficiency measures
  • Regenerative agriculture
  • Shade structures/cloth
  • Vertical farming
“By offering these grants to farmers, Phoenix is not only helping to strengthen the local food system but we're also encouraging growers to think of newer, better ways to take climate action that preserves and improves our land, air, and water for generations to come," Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said.

Eligible farms must be producing food for human consumption according to all local, state, and federal regulations. The farm must also be located within the City of Phoenix. Grants range anywhere from $1,000 to $75,000, and funds for an approved grant will be paid in installments over the course of one year.

“The Resilient & Sustainable Agriculture Grant is an invaluable resource for our local farmers, and an important step forward in transitioning our current agriculture processes into something that is more sustainable," District 8 Councilmember Carlos Garcia said. “I am proud to serve as a councilmember in a city that sees the value in addressing agriculture in our changing climate and prioritizes financial support for those at the heart and soul of our food system."

Farmers can apply individually, or farms located very close to each other can submit a joint proposal as part of an effort to adopt/expand resilience and sustainability measures across a larger geography.

The application deadline is April 5, 2022. Get more details and the full application HERE (aplicar en español).
