Matthew Arvay, chief information officer (CIO) for the city of Phoenix, has been recognized by Constellation Research on its 2020 Business Transformation 150, an elite list of executives leading business transformation efforts around the globe.

“To be in the company of influential and transformative global leaders from different industries is such an honor,” said Arvay. “As Phoenix establishes itself to become a Smart City, I am more motivated to find solutions to our community’s challenges through strategic partnerships and collaboration, and by leveraging technology and exploring different business models to realize efficiencies and improve our customers’ experience.”

Currently, Arvay is leading Phoenix’s first Smart City Strategic Plan, which will have a community-centric approach to implementing innovative solutions to civic challenges. Having only been with the city for less than three years, Arvay has led the Information Technology Services Department in modernizing the city’s foundational infrastructure by replacing the organization’s network that supports more than 12,000 telephones across 500 city locations, connected by approximately 300 miles of cables.

“Matt has worked tirelessly since coming to the city to find creative solutions to an ever-increasing demand from residents and employees to make smart use of technology to solve big problems,” noted Phoenix City Manager Ed Zuercher. “Good, coordinated use of technology is key to government transparency and access, and is a foundation of our success.”

The 2020 Business Transformation 150 identifies the world’s most influential executives across a variety of industries, including Arvay. Nominations from peers, industry influencers, technology vendors and analysts powered the six-month selection process. Each executive on the list demonstrates an understanding of how the business environment is transforming in response to digital and exponential technologies, and these leaders are actively preparing their organizations to excel during and after the transformation.
