Burton Barr Central Library To Host Annual Summer Solstice Celebration on June 20

June 18, 2024 4:00 PM

Join us on the 5th Floor of Burton Barr Central Library to celebrate the Summer Solstice on Thursday, June 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Welcome the first day of summer and the longest day of the year while witnessing the architectural magic of Burton Barr Central Library. Observe the moment when man-made engineering combines with the power of the sun to reveal the moment of solstice.

Since 1995, it’s been a tradition to welcome guests at Burton Barr Central Library on this special day. Residents leave in awe of the light and community that shines through this building. This year, Phoenix Public Library celebrates milestone markers such as the 90th anniversary of Arizona Room, the 15th anniversary of College Depot, and adding new amenities such as the Bookmobile to our catalog of cornerstone public resources.

What to Know: This year’s commemorative Summer Solstice prints will pay homage to James McClintock and Dorothy McClintock, whose donation made the Arizona Room possible. We will also have special John Milton prints to celebrate the historic treasure recently discovered in the Rare Book Room and Friends of the Phoenix Public Library will have t-shirts for sale.

Activities: Head to MACH1 to celebrate the Summer Solstice to create your own solstice sun catcher! Using collaged tissue paper, we'll learn all about light and color and create fun sunlight-catching art pieces for you to hang up on your window at home. This is a walk-in program for children of all ages and their families.

Music will begin at 11:30 a.m. The solstice presentation will begin at 12:00 p.m.
