Funeral, Moment of Silence to Honor Commander Killed in Line of Duty

April 7, 2020 4:00 PM

Family, colleagues and the community paid tribute to Commander Greg Carnicle.  The 31-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department was killed on March 29 during a domestic call.

Restrictions surrounding large gatherings prevented traditional memorial services for an in the line of duty death, however there was a still small funeral as well as a moment of silence with the Phoenix Honor Guard.

Officers from the Phoenix Police Department lined the streets outside St. Jerome's Catholic Church near 35th Avenue & Peoria.  They were joined by ladder trucks from the Phoenix Fire Department displaying a large American Flag as well as officers from jurisdictions through the area.

While still practicing social distancing, these officers were able to receive the body of Commander Carnicle as the hearse made its way from the mortuary to the church.

At the church, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams, Mayor Kate Gallego and Councilman Michael Nowakowski joined the Department's executive team and commanders to pay their respects, while observing social distancing, to Commander Carnicle.

The only family allowed in the service was the Commander's wife, his children and their spouses and his parents.  The traditional Catholic funeral mass included scripture readings and songs performed by members of the Carnicle Family.  Father Gary Regula lead the services, including communion.

Other family members as well as thousands of community members and police officers turned to Facebook Live to participate in the funeral virtually.

“But we who have faith are reminded that even though he has passed way too young, he now shares eternal life with God," Father Regula told the family.

Shortly after the funeral, members of the Phoenix Honor Guard joined the leadership of the Phoenix Police Department in creating a virtual moment of silence for the community to join together across the state at Noon to remember Commander Carnicle.  The somber occasion included the playing of Taps on the bugle by Sgt. Joseph Ramirez.

A brief moment out of the day to let the family of Commander Carnicle know that even while we must stand physically apart, we stand beside them as we all mourn the loss of Commander, father and friend Greg Carnicle.
