Driving in a monsoon

Tips for Driving During Monsoon Storms

July 11, 2023 2:00 PM

Rain, wind and dust make for a difficult and dangerous driving condition for all valley drivers.

With the monsoon season upon us, the Phoenix Police Department would like to remind our community of a few safety tips before during and after traveling this monsoon season.

Prior to leaving make sure:

  • Your gas is topped off

  • Windshield wipers are good

  • All major vehicle components are in working order

  • Check weather reports

  • Know the route you are traveling as well as secondary routes

If you find yourself driving in a monsoon storm:

  • Do not panic

  • Slow your car down and pull into the nearest parking lot or residential street you can find

  • Turn your lights off and wait until the storm passes

  • If you are on the freeway and cannot exit to find a parking lot, pull off the road as far as you can put on the parking brakes, turn off your lights and wait until the storm passes.

Following the storm:

  • You will notice your car windshield is dirty and wet, having a towel and water bottle with you to clean your windows will provide a better view for your drive home.

  • While driving home take your time, the roads will be covered with objects left over from the wind such as down trees, power lines and pooled up water areas.
