Review Motorcycle Safety Tips

July 11, 2024 11:00 AM

With National Motorcycle Day on the second Friday in July, the Phoenix Police Department would like to remind riders to enjoy their ride, but to be safe while doing it.

Here are some tips for staying safe while out on a motorcycle:

  • Wear proper gear.  Wear protective clothing such as a well fit jacket, gloves, riding boots and long pants, as well as a DOT approved helmet.
  • Maintain your motorcycle. Like any vehicle, riders should make sure the motorcycle is in good running condition. Check the tire pressure, breaks, fluids, lights and mirrors.
  • Stay visible. Do not ride in the blind spots of other vehicles. Always have headlights on, even during the daytime hours.
  • Do not ride under the influence.  Do not ride after drinking alcohol or taking drugs, including some prescriptions.
  • Avoid inclement weather. This includes stormy weather and extreme heat.
  • Stay alert. Pay attention to the vehicles around you. Keep an eye out for debris in the roadway.

The Traffic Education Safety Squad of the Phoenix Police Department likes to remind riders of the 2-4-12 Rule.

  • Keep a 2 second distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Look ahead 4 seconds.
  • Scan ahead 12 seconds.
