The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that includes audio, visuals and information related to an officer-involved shooting (OIS) which occurred on January 17, 2025.
This incident began in the area of 35th Avenue and Baseline Road when Phoenix police officers assigned to the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct’s Community Action Squad responded to a neighborhood complaint. This complaint indicated that there were multiple trespassers in an abandoned home.
When officers approached the house, people ran from the home and jumped the back wall of the property. Officers went to the back of the home and saw a man running west on Baseline Road.
The officers drove their marked police Tahoe to cut off the man and contact him. As they stopped their Tahoe and got out, the man continued to run away from them. Officers noticed the man was carrying a gun in his hand.
Additional officers and resources were requested. The officers got back in their car and continued to follow the man.
As the officers got closer to the man, he turned into the entryway of a gated community. The man pointed his handgun in the direction of the officers. One officer fired one round from his rifle, striking the man. The man fell to the ground.
Following the shooting, officers rendered aid to the man prior to him being transported to a nearby hospital. The man did not survive his injuries.
A handgun was recovered next to where the man fell to the ground.
The officer involved in this shooting is assigned to the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct and has approximately 8 years of service with the department.
This incident is the subject of a criminal investigation to be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
It is also the subject of an administrative investigation.
Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete.
