The 16th Street bridge and all surrounding roadways have reopened.
A Union Pacific Railroad freight train derailment under the bridge early Sunday morning forced the precautionary closure of 16th Street from Jefferson to Grant streets and Jackson Street from 15th Street to 16th Place. On Sunday night, the Phoenix Street Transportation Department determined that there was no structural damage to the bridge support pillars and reopened the roadway.​
Original statement from 5 p.m. - 16th Street Bridge Closed Due to Train Derailment
Due to a Sunday morning Union Pacific Railroad freight train derailment under the 16th Street bridge, 16th Street from Jefferson to Grant streets and Jackson Street from 15th Street to 16th Place is closed as the Phoenix Street Transportation Department works with Union Pacific and other agencies to assess the incident. The restrictions are in place for all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. A timeline for how long the closures will be in place has not been determined.
