Fall Applications Now Open for Phoenix Water Wrangler Volunteer Program

October 3, 2023 4:00 PM

Are you passionate about water conservation? Then become a Phoenix Water Wrangler!

The Phoenix Water Services Department is accepting applications for the fall 2023 cohort now through Saturday, Oct. 14.

This innovative volunteer program mobilizes community members to promote responsible water stewardship within the City of Phoenix by collaboratively performing water conservation outreach, communication, and education at local events.

“The Wranglers are a group of highly motivated and water-conscious Phoenix residents who find the fun in helping their community to learn about water conservation,” said Emilie Brown, Water Resource Specialist, and program coordinator. “For the Wranglers and all Phoenicians, water conservation is a way of life, and our goal at the City and in the volunteer program is to make saving water an easy choice for everyone.”

There are several volunteer opportunities on weekdays (day and evening) and weekends every year. Past events have included community meetings, environmental education opportunities, school visits, and clean-ups.

Erica Segal, who joined the Water Wranglers in spring 2022, enjoys seeing the conservation team and volunteers in action at public events where she is always learning something new.

"Living in the Sonoran Desert is a very unique and beautiful place unlike anywhere I've ever lived,” said Segal. “Understanding where our water comes from and how it's used is critical and beneficial knowledge, especially when every action we take has a huge impact."

Thanks to the dedication of our passionate Water Wranglers, the group was one of many teams recently honored by Phoenix City Manager Jeff Barton and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego at the City’s annual volunteer awards ceremony.

“Joining the Water Wranglers provides an opportunity to meet like-minded people,” said Mike Kleminski, who became a Water Wrangler last year. “Through different volunteer activities I can help the City of Phoenix Water Services share their plans for conserving and protecting our water with my friends and neighbors.”

To participate in the Phoenix Water Wrangler program, volunteers must complete a minimum of four in-person training sessions. The first two training sessions will focus on general water topics and the final three sessions will cover community engagement, outreach, education, and how Phoenix Water operates.
