Phoenix Streets improvements

How Will Prop. 479 Impact Phoenix?

Prop. 479 is the continuation of an existing, dedicated half-cent sales tax in Maricopa County to fund transportation improvement projects. The continuation of the sales tax will fund future freeway, streets and transit projects and services shown below:


Phoenix Transit Service

  • Continue and Improve Local Routes and Commuter Bus Service.
  • Maintenance of existing Light Rail System.
  • New Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route on 35th Ave. and Van Buren St.

Phoenix Street Improvements

  • Reconstruct 7th Ave. between McDowell Rd. a​nd Northern Ave.
  • Reconstruct 7th St. between McDowell Rd. and Hatcher Rd.
  • Reconstruct Bell Rd. between 51st Ave. and Scottsdale Rd.
  • Reconstruct Indian School Rd. from 59th A​ve. to 27th Ave.
  • Widen Baseline Rd. between 63rd and 71st avenues.
  • Widen Dobbins Rd. between 27th Ave. and Loop 202.
  • Widen Southern Ave. between 37th Ave. and 51st Ave.
  • Widen Sonoran Desert Dr. between Dove Valley Rd. and Cave Creek Rd.

  • Increased roadway capacity
  • Drainage improvements
  • Improved pedestrian and bicycle connections
  • Intersection upgrades

  • Reduced travel times 

Phoenix Freeway Improvements

Spine CorridorProp. 479 freeway improvements will improve commute and drive times for Phoenix area residents and visitors. 

A big focus is on the “Spine Corridor,” which serves as the backbone for transportation in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Spine Corridor is a 31-mile stretch of the I-17 and I-10 freewaysOver 40% off all daily freeway traffic uses the Spine Corridor.

Interstate I-10

  • Interstate 10Improve Mini Stack (I-10/SR202/SR51)
  • Improve I-10 from Deck Park Tunnel to the I-17 Split
  • Improve I-10 from SR101 to I-17
  • Reconstruct interchanges at 27th, 35th, 43rd, 51st, 67th, 75th, 83rd, and 91st avenues, and at Baseline Rd., Warner Rd., Chander Blvd.
  • Install Direct HOV lanes at the I-17 Split
  • Build new 1-10 collector lanes between Baseline Rd. and Elliot Rd.

Interstate I-17

  • Interstate 17Rebuild I-17 interchanges at Bell Rd., Thunderbird Rd., Peoria Ave., and Glendale Ave.
  • Improve I-17 from I-10 to Loop 101
  • Build west busway interchange at I-10
  • Construct HOV lanes between SR74 (Carefree Highway) and Anthem Way

SR 30

  • SR 30Build the new SR30 freeway in the Southwest Valley to connect Loop 303 and I-17

US 60

  • US 60Install Direct HOV lanes at Grand Avenue and I-17

Loop 101

  • Loop 101Install direct HOV lanes at I-17
  • Widen Loop 101 from I-10 to US60 (Grand Ave.)

Loop 303

  • Loop 303Install a new interchange at I-17
  • Improve SR303 from Lake Pleasant Parkway to I-17​
