Looking for information related to the 7th Street bridge over the Salt River? Information about that project here.
The city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is set to begin the rehabilitation project on the 7th Street bridge that goes over the Union Pacific railroad tracks just south of Jefferson Street. The project involves replacing bearing pads so the bridge continues to function as designed. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2020 with an estimated completion date of fall 2020.
The bearing pads are soft neoprene membranes between the bridge deck and the vertical concrete supports. The pads allow for thermal expansion and contraction of the bridge while preventing direct concrete-to-concrete contact. The bearing pads are underneath the bridge and should be out of sight of the general public.

How are these pads replaced?
To replace the pads, the bridge decks on either side
of the vertical piers need to be raised about two inches and locked into place.
Why don’t I see any work taking
place?
The project is occurring mostly underneath the
bridge. The closures occur when the bridge deck is being raised a maximum of 2
inches and then locked into place. Once the deck is locked into place, the road
can be opened with cars allowed to move at a reduced speed.
How does this affect vehicles
using the bridge?
The maximum allowable speed will be reduced from 35
to 15 while most of the construction is occurring. During the night closures, no
vehicles can use the 7th Street Bridge.
What is the duration of the
project?
24 weeks
How long will the road closures
be?
The longest closures will last
eight hours, starting at 10 p.m. and reopening no later than 6 a.m.
Work is planned to occur mostly on
weekends.
At what times will the closures
occur?
Starting at 10 p.m. on nights when there are no
events planned at Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix Convention Center or Chase
Field.
What is the detour route?
Southbound traffic on 7th
Street
Right (west) on Washington
Left (south) on 3rd Street to Lincoln
