Mobility Study Goal

The goal of the T2050 Mobility Studies is to improve safety, connectivity, and accessibility for all people -- regardless of their age or ability level -- who walk, ride a bicycle, or use transit to get to their important destinations.

Mobility Area Description

The Grand Canal, one of the Valley’s approximately 200 miles of irrigation canals, bisects the Indian School-Grand Neighborhoods Mobility Area running from the southwest corner to the northeast corner. Although there are several pre-schools and parochial schools, there are no public schools. Two new HAWK beacons will be installed in the Area in the near future: one will be at the Grand Canal crossing near Indian School Road and 22nd Ave. and the other near the Grand Canal crossing near 19th Ave. and Glenrosa Ave. A HAWK is a special kind of traffic signal that lets the user (pedestrian, bicyclist) push a button, which causes signal lights to flash to stop traffic, so the user can safety cross the street. The Area also lacks parks and healthcare facilities - the four nearest urgent care facilities are more than a mile distant.

Update / Next Steps

A list of proposed recommendations to improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility in the Indian School-Grand Canal Neighborhoods were identified by the study team based on an analysis of the study area and public input. This list is included in the Proposed Conditions Report available below in the Study Documents section.

Residents Are Telling Us . . .We interviewed residents, business owners, and other community leaders in the Mobility Area to get
their likes, dislikes, and opinions about mobility and accessibility. Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • The Arizona Canal is a barrier to keep crime out of the neighborhood

  • Some cut-through traffic on 23rd Avenue trying to avoid northbound I-17

  • Vehicle speeds are too high on 22nd Avenue and 23rd Avenue

  • Significant destinations within and outside of the Mobility Area are Christown Spectrum, Safeway, and light rail on Camelback

  • Vehicle speeds and crashes are an issue on Indian School Road

Public Input

Thank you for your interest in making our city streets safer and more livable. Opportunities for public involvement will be posted on this webpage as they become available.
