The City of Phoenix contracted with Haydon Building Corp. for construction of the new Sonoran Boulevard. This new arterial roadway, located adjacent to the Sonoran Preserve, begins at 15th Avenue and Dove Valley Road, and proceeds east through this scenic corridor to Cave Creek Road. The project includes 7 miles of new arterial roadway; a 5-mile shared-use path that weaves throughout the desert up to a ¼ mile from the roadway; 3 bridges with artistic features, and balconies with seating and shade; and renaming the existing Dove Valley Road to Sonoran Boulevard.
Other special amenities include raised medians and landscaping that will maintain the visual aspect of the preserve by blending nature into the roadway design; box culverts that allow for natural drainage as well as accommodate crossing areas for wildlife, equestrians, and hikers.
Sonoran Boulevard was completed in May, 2013.
A Solution Based Forum was held on June 28, 2011, to discuss the Sonoran Boulevard construction project with residents and other stakeholders. Participants included representatives from Council District 2 and the area’s major homeowner groups, developers, and employers. State Land Department staff and City staff from the Street Transportation, Planning and Development, and Parks and Recreation Departments were present. An attorney with extensive experience in this process, David C. Tierney, agreed to conduct the sessions at no cost to the City.
