We're Cool Outreach Initiative
In 2017, the We’re Cool heat relief initiative was launched by the Volunteer Phoenix Office, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) of the Phoenix Fire Department to connect vulnerable residents to cooling centers and hydration stations during times of extreme heat. This initiative supports Maricopa Association of Government’s Heat Relief Network which includes partners such as the Salvation Army, Maricopa Department of Public Health, Arizona State University, and the city’s Human Services, Parks, and Public Transit Departments. The city’s newly established Office of Heat Response and Mitigation joined the We’re Cool initiative for summer 2022.
As the 2022 heat relief season comes to a close, we look back at all the accomplishments. About 10,190 heat relief supplies were distributed to 4,000 unsheltered people over the course of 95 outreach shifts.
