Stormwater Management Program

Business

Businesses can help protect surface water quality by using Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce the amount of pollutants entering the storm drain system.  Businesses that have the potential to pollute stormwater are required under Phoenix City Code Chapter 32C to develop and implement a Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP).  SWMPs identify a facility's BMPs (such as good housekeeping, chemical and waste management, and outdoor storage practices) to protect stormwater quality.

SWMP Resources

In addition to compliance with City ordinances, industries having certain Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes may be regulated by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) under the Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) Multi Sector General Permit (MSGP). The City of Phoenix will accept Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) in lieu of a SWMP, as long as the SWPPP contains all required information.

The City of Phoenix inspects industrial and commercial facilities for compliance with City stormwater ordinances.
