Project Overview
RIO PHX is a collaborative effort by the City of Phoenix and various property/business owners and community stakeholders to create a series of policy documents that will help promote a 20-mile Rio Salado (Salt River) corridor as a local and regional destination that attracts positive investment for the benefit of existing/future businesses, residents, and tourists. This plan aims to be a key implementation component of the regional Rio Reimagined project. This initiative also seeks to address outstanding needs in the area and create opportunities for housing, employment, recreation, art, and ecological restoration. The final aim of this project is also to improve health outcomes for existing and future residents.
RIO PHX has multiple planning phases. The map below shows the boundaries of the first planning phase.
Planning Process
A series of policy plans will be developed, one for each segment of the river, following three phases of planning:
- Current State Assessment (Who We Are)
- Vision For the Future (What We Want)
- Strategies and Implementation (How We Get There)
Objective & Mission
OBJECTIVE: Transform the 20-mile Rio Salado Corridor (Phoenix segment) as a defining feature that enriches our history, culture, and natural beauty while fostering vibrant, walkable communities along and beyond its banks and builds upon other existing infrastructure investments in the area.
MISSION: Reconnect Phoenix residents to the Rio Salado while enhancing its ecological habitat and improving the quality of development within the surrounding area.
