About PSPRS

Sworn public safety members are covered under the State of Arizona's Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS).

Under Arizona Revised Statutes, employers who participate in PSPRS form Local Boards that act as the local administrative bodies to the main, statewide system. For the City of Phoenix, the Retirement Office serves as Local Board staff and the Retirement Administrator serves as the Local Board Secretary. There is one Local Board for sworn police employees and one Local Board for sworn fire employees. Each board has two elected members, two citizen members, and a Mayoral appointee. Below is a listing of Local Board members.

Membership/Tiers

Your hire date into a PSPRS-covered position determines what tier of benefits you are eligible for and when you become a member of the system. PSPRS has developed a matrix of the various plan provisions.

If you have questions regarding benefits, contact the Retirement Office at (602) 534-4400.

Important Information for Tier 3 Members

For new PSPRS members hired after July 1, 2017, you will have 90 days from the date you were hired to elect to either join the PSPRS defined benefit (DB) plan or the PSPRS defined contribution (DC) plan. If you do not make a choice within 90 days, you will automatically be enrolled in the DB plan. The choice you make is irrevocable for the rest of your PSPRS-related career, so you are encouraged to spend some time learning about your options.

PSPRS has various resources available to you on their New Members Page .

Following your first paycheck, you should enroll on the PSPRS Members Only Portal . PSPRS sends information directly to members via the information registered in the Members Only portal. The portal also provides many services to members, including:

  • Benefit Estimates
  • Contribution history
  • Cost service purchase/transfers

Please click here for instructions on how to enroll in the Members Only Portal.
