The Equal Opportunity Department enforces the city of Phoenix ordinances that prohibit discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. The division:
- Investigates complaints in employment filed on the basis of race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, genetic information, marital status, sexual orientation, disability or gender identity or expression
- Accepts housing discrimination complaints related to the sale, lease, insuring or financing of housing on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, familial status, pregnancy, domicile of a minor, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression
- Investigates complaints related to public accommodations on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, age, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression
- Serves as an advocate in fair housing and fair employment education and outreach
- Monitors the development and implementation of the city’s equal employment opportunity program
- Administers the city's American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance program as an employer and as a service provider
- Provides training upon request on disability issues, sexual harassment prevention, fair housing and equal employment opportunity
