​​Street Maintenance Worker (SMW) Apprentice

Job Description: 

Apprentices learn to  repairs asphalt and potholes, sweeps streets and removes debris, conducts street resurfacing, oversees the removal of weeds in undeveloped right-of-way, grades and dustproofs alleys, responds to storm related issues such as flooded streets and clogged storm drains, and provides wash maintenance. ​

Program Details:

Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training and 4,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours and minimum of 288 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as a SMW apprentice. After successful completion apprentices will promote into the SMW classification and serve a 12-month probationary period. 

 Salary:

  • $21.54 / hour starting wage 

  • $22.61 / hour when CDL obtained

  •  $23.74 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours 

  • $24.93 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours 

  • $26.18 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours 

  • $27.49 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours  

Starting Pay Upon Graduation $57,179

City of Phoenix will assist apprentice to obtain while on the job: 

  • Secure a Class (A) Commercial Driver’s License Learning Permit 

  • Secure a Class (A) Commercial Driver’s License 

  • Complete All Required Street Maintenance Training Classes 

  • Graduate the SMW Apprenticeship Program 

  • Earn State of Arizona Completion Certificate 

  • Earn Department of Labor Completion Certificate 

  • Promote to Street Maintenance Worker ​

Minimum Qualifications (these are subject to change per program requirements):

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a Class D or equivalent driver’s license for one year prior to entering the apprenticeship program, and prove one year of driving experience in a vehicle other than a motorcycle. 

  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust for extended periods of time. 

  • Requires working for prolonged periods standing in one location, and/or walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. 

  • Working early mornings and Saturdays may be required. 

  • Moving heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less) may be required. 

  • Individuals will be required to obtain a 12-month medical clearance from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) issued by a City of Phoenix occupational medical provider.  

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business.  Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.  Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
