Gardener Apprentice

Job Description: 

Apprentices learn to perform routine work in grounds maintenance, basic tree and shrub planting, pruning, turf maintenance, irrigation management, and general maintenance of landscapes and facilities located throughout the City of Phoenix. 

Program Details:

Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training and 4,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours and 288 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as a Gardener apprentice. After successful completion apprentices will promote into the Gardener classification and serve a 12-month probationary period. 

Salary:

  • $17.13 / hour starting wage 

  • $18.16 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours 

  • $19.07 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours 

  • $20.02 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours

  • $21.02 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours  

Starting Pay Upon Graduation: $43,722

City of Phoenix will assist apprentice to obtain while on the job: 

  • Secure a State of Arizona Pesticide License 

  • Secure a Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) Certificate 

  • Secure an Arizona Certified Landscape Professional (ACLP) Certificate 

  • Secure Trailer Training Certificate 

  • Graduate the Gardener Apprenticeship Program 

  • Earn State of Arizona Completion Certificate 

  • Earn Department of Labor Completion Certificate 

  • Promote to Gardener 

Minimum Qualifications (these are subject to change per program requirements):

  • High school diploma or GED at the time of hire. 

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance. 

  • Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. 

  • Some positions in this classification require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid Class D or equivalent license. 

  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
