Project Update Notice - May 2024

About the Project

A future paving project along Campbell Avenue from 67th to 59th avenues provides an opportunity for the Phoenix Street Transportation Department to review restriping options that would better accommodate the needs of all roadway users. This is a residential corridor that includes two school campuses.

The number of travel lanes will remain the same, but proposed options would remove parking to add bike lanes or buffered bike lanes where they don't currently exist.

Pavement maintenance (new asphalt) is scheduled for summer/fall 2024, and restriping would happen shortly after paving was completed.

Proposed Changes

The department is proposing the following for this corridor:

  • From 67th Avenue to east of 65th Drive: Narrow travel lanes and remove parking from one side of the street to add a bike lane. Parking would be maintained from east of 65th Drive to 63rd Avenue.
  • From 63rd Avenue to 59th Avenue: Add a parking lane to one side of the street and remove parking from the other side. Currently, parking is allowed in existing bike lanes from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
  • For both segments: There is an option to remove all parking and add buffered bike lanes.

Scroll down to view cross-section diagrams that show the current street design and proposed street design.

The proposed bike lanes would connect to Campbell Avenue at 59th Avenue.

Buffered bike lanes add space between people driving and people walking or biking for increased protection from vehicles, improved safety and added comfort. Additionally, the visual narrowing of the lane widths to accommodate bike lanes will help guide cars and deter speeding.
