UPDATE 12/4/20:

GRID Bike Share is concluding its operations in Phoenix on December 31, 2020. Improving access to affordable and multimodal transportation is a priority for the City of Phoenix.  The city plans to use the conclusion of the current regional bikeshare program as an opportunity to reimagine micromobility and multimodal transportation options within the ever-changing urban transportation landscape.

The Street Transportation Department is actively researching options to collaborate with surrounding municipalities to reintroduce a regional bikeshare or similar program.

The city thanks CycleHop (parent company of Grid) for having operated Phoenix’s first bikeshare program over the last six years. We are excited to build upon this foundation to continue to improve multimodal transportation in Phoenix.

Bike Share Program

There are two methods of sharing a bicycle in a bike share program:  "docked" and "dockless".

In a "docked" bike share program, people rent a bike from some particular vendors "docking" station and return it at another docking station belonging to the same vendor. Docking stations are unique bike racks that store available bikes, and only release them by a locking mechanism which can be unlocked via mobile phone app once the user enters in payment information.

When the user finishes their ride by parking it in another docking station, the bike locks to the station and ends the trip. The bike is now ready for another customer to use.

In a dockless bike share program, customers rent bicycles by locating an available bike using a mobile phone app.  That same app unlocks the bicycle using a scanner unique to the vendor. When finished, riders leave the bicycle in a suitable location without placing it in a docking station.  Dockless bikes are initially staged in specific locations by the vendor, and are "re-balanced" by the vendor within a period of time to maintain the availability of bicycles in a given geographic area.
