Phoenix's Electric Vehicle Progress
The City of Phoenix is committed to advancing electric vehicle (EV) adoption and infrastructure to support a cleaner, more sustainable future. This page provides key data on EV registrations, the City's transition to an electric fleet, and the growth of EV charging stations. Learn about Phoenix's goals, current progress, and future plans as we work toward expanding EV accessibility and reducing transportation-related emissions.
EV Registrations
Electric vehicle (EV) registrations are on the rise. In 2022, Arizona ranked #9 among U.S. states for plug-in electric vehicles, with 9.86 EVs per 1,000 people.

Forecasted EV Ownership in Phoenix by 2030
The Transportation Electrification Action Plan (TEAP) sets a goal of supporting 280,000 EVs in Phoenix by 2030. The table below outlines a 30% compounded annual growth rate, forecasting the number of EVs in Phoenix through 2030.

City of Phoenix – EV Fleet Transition
The City of Phoenix is leading by example by transitioning light-duty fleet vehicles, as well as some solid waste trucks and buses in the heavy-duty fleet, to electric. The TEAP aims to transition 200 fleet vehicles to EVs by 2030. The table below provides details on the current EVs in the fleet and those on order.

EV Charging Stations
The number of EV charging stations in the U.S. has steadily increased since 2011. Between 2015 and 2020, the number of charging ports more than doubled, and in 2021 alone, there was a 55% increase.

As of July 2023, Arizona had 1,065 publicly accessible EV charging station locations and 2,966 EV charging ports, with most located in Maricopa County. In addition, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, aims to deploy charging infrastructure every 50 miles along interstate corridors. You can learn more by checking out the ADOT NEVI Plan.

There are currently 616 publicly accessible EV charging ports located in Phoenix. 246 of the publicly accessible chargers are located on city owned property, located at city parks, libraries, the convention center, Sky Harbor Airport, and parking garages. The City of Phoenix has a goal of installing 500 publicly accessible chargers by 2030.
