The City of Phoenix is proud to recognize May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month. This is the first year the City is commemorating "Mental Health Matters," an awareness campaign to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and provide resources to people living with mental health disorders, or whose lives are touched by mental illness.

Mental and physical health are equally important. The City partners with several agencies to provide resources to help people living with mental illness, and to change the conversation around mental health.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health 59.3 million adults in the United States (23.1%) experienced a mental illness in 2022. Mental health can include short-term and long-term conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar disorder and many other conditions. These can impact not only individuals but their families, friends and work life and the community. In extreme cases, mental illness can even lead to substance abuse or homelessness.
