City of Phoenix Seeks Community Input Ahead of Police Chief Finalist Forum

    Hiring Incentive Presentation - 7

City of Phoenix residents have an opportunity to participate in the hiring process for the next Police Chief, providing feedback on what they think should be priorities for this important City leadership position and submitting questions to ask candidates.

More than two years after naming an interim chief, the City is now looking to fill the role permanently, working in partnership with an executive search firm to conduct a nationwide search for the department’s next leader. The City is also looking for community participation in the hiring process.

By March, the City plans to have a list of finalists who will be introduced publicly. In an effort to have a transparent and inclusive process, the City will host a moderated Finalist Forum. Residents can submit questions online and in person. The survey (offered in both English and Spanish) is now active, where you can share your opinions on the leadership attributes needed for the Chief, what priorities you believe would build trust and improve safety, and submit questions for possible use during the Finalist Forum. Members of the public can attend the forum at the City Council Chambers or watch it live on PHXTV and YouTube.

In order to identify the finalists, City leadership will carefully review resumes to determine the most qualified applicants who are committed to professional, ethical, and accountable policing and have experience implementing contemporary policing principles and professional best practices. Initial interviews will also be conducted by panels that will include City staff, business and community leaders, and labor group representatives.

“This is a pivotal time for our great City and its police department. This will be one of the most significant hires we make as we work to build trust, strengthen accountability, and provide the highest level of service to keep our community safe,” said City Manager Jeff Barton. “I am committed to making sure the public plays a key role in ensuring we hire the right person. Input from our community, officers, elected officials, and labor groups will be critical to the selection process.”

The City launched a website where residents can get additional information on the hiring process.

The City hopes to name a permanent Police Chief sometime in April.
