About this Student Worker Position

The Education and Engagement Assistant will work with the Curator of Engagement in the planning, execution and evaluation of Amplified, a visual and performing arts experience designed to encourage and increase multi-community participation at the museum by activating the galleries with sound and art. Amplified is an all-day event featuring a stacked line-up of bands—from indie rock, electronic, Latinx, and Americana to experimental, lo-fi, and pop—hailing from around the region and world, one-day-only visual-art installations, site-specific performances, and more. The assistant will attend and support programmatic planning meetings, dialogue with various museum staff involved with program development, as well as with audience and community members. With our current focus on engaging underserved communities in particular, the assistant will participate in and learn different strategies to engage multiple communities in the development of this art-engagement program, as well as related in-person and online resources, and actionable evaluation tools. The assistant will support the execution of the event in full and provide day-of support for the Curator of Engagement.​


Specific responsibilities

  1. Help the Education and Engagement staff with the event planning logistics for Amplified, including vendor management, programmatic development, internal planning meetings, volunteer recruitment, and more​.

  2. Assists in development of innovative community outreach and engagement concepts and activities related to the Amplified event. ​

  3. Work with Education and Engagement team to actively gather and facilitate community engagement and feedback prior to the event, including audience and community research assignments and preparation of materials to engage community entities/stakeholders, i.e.​

 

Desired qualifications

Successful candidates should be self-sufficient, strong oral, writing, and research skills with an eye for detail, an enthusiasm for public speaking, and strong customer service skills. They should be able to learn quickly and be confident in their abilities to take on new challenges. Preference is given to candidates with community engagement / museum / art education experience.​

Jessica Jacobson Interim Director of Education

We are very interested in the opportunity of hosting a student worker for the 2024-2025 academic year. Student workers provide invigorated energy, experience, and perspective into the important work we do at the Museum and provide a unique opportunity to support existing programmatic endeavors in a new way. It is important to provide access to real-world community engagement experiences for incoming artists and arts advocates and highlight the many ways in which cultural organizations serve our diverse community populations. This position will provide a student worker the opportunity to see internal staff planning processes, vendor management, contractual agreements, event logistics, strategic planning, onsite activation of art gallery space, and much more. The Museum is committed to embracing young adult and multicultural perspectives to strengthen the reach and impact of our programs. Supporting the next generation of arts engagement professionals is vital to ensuring the work we do has long lasting impacts with the Phoenix area and we are successfully educating and resourcing the next generation of arts leaders.

Professional Biography

Jessica Jacobson holds a BFA in Art and Visual Culture Education from the University of Arizona and a Master of Arts in Leadership and Cultural Management from Colorado State University. Jessica combines her experience as a secondary arts educator with her passion for arts advocacy and community engagement.

The Phoenix ArtCorps​​

The Phoenix ArtCorps is a student employment program from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture that seeks to provide students with​ the comprehensive skills, mentorship, and experience ​they need to launch their arts and culture careers. Over the course of the 2024-2025 academic cycle​, each student works 400 hours for $17/hr (around 15 to 20 hours a week), with additional stipends and professional development opportunities. To apply, students must be current or recently graduated undergraduate students at a community college, university, or other institution of higher education based in Phoenix (or live in Phoenix themselves). Applicants must be at least 18 years old. There are no other enrollment requirements. Students do not need to be majoring in the arts or similar fields to apply.
