Environmental Quality and Sustainability Commission​​

On March 22, 2017 the Phoenix City Council appr​oved the Environmental​ Quality Commission's name change to better reflect its work. ​The focus of the Environmental Quality and Sustainability Commission (EQSC) has expanded to embrace the social, ecologic and economic objectives of sustainability to improve quality of life for current and future generations.​

The EQSC identifies and advises the Phoenix City Council on environmental quality and sustainability issues affecting the city and recommends to the City Council policies, positions, roles, and action the city might take to address those issues in a manner that protects, promotes, restores, or enhances the city's natural and built environments.​ View the EQSC By-Laws here. EQSC and EQSC Subcommittee meetings follow Open Meeting Law requirements as outlined in the Arizona Open Meeting Law Handbook​.

EQSC also announced the release of the city's most recent sustainability report.  The 2015-16 sustainability report highlights the accomplishments achieved thus far by the city and the 2050 ​Environmental Sustainability goals, which reflect the community's desired outcomes for a socially, economically and environmentally resilient city.

Message from EQSC Chair Colin Tetreault​

The Environmental Quality and Sustainability Commission is the leading non-partisan sustainability-based citizen advisory body in the state of Arizona. The Commission engages the public, recommends policy, and acts as an honest broker in advancing sustainability within the city and beyond. Working in partnership with the community, businesses, NGO’s, and all levels of government, we are committed to advocating for and advancing solutions that make a demonstrable impact for all.

 

Creating a sustainable Phoenix is in our shared interest. By addressing pressing issues like global climate change, urban heat island, water availability, clean energy independence, complete transportation, and circular and inclusive economies we can create a socially just, environmentally beautiful, and economically prosperous future. It won’t be easy, but together we can create a 21st-century city for everyone.
