​Phoenix is Accepting Applications for the Position of Police Chief​

Phoenix Police ChiefThe City of Phoenix seeks highly qualified applicants to be its next Police Chief. Applicants must be committed to professional, ethical, and accountable policing, and have extensive experience implementing contemporary policing principles and professional best practices.

The person chosen for this position must be able to inspire the confidence and trust of the City’s diverse communities and the department’s staff of more than 1,300 professional staff and 2,500 police officers, which is anticipated to grow to 3,125 sworn positions as authorized by the budget. 

The successful candidate will be able to form and lead strong, effective teams; develop efficient administrative processes that support the organization’s mission; grow and strengthen the agency; delegate responsibility; solve problems quickly; communicate clearly; and be committed to continuous organizational improvement — all while never losing sight of the ultimate goal: to deliver exceptional police service; to work collaboratively with our community and our employees as a unified team to foster the highest level of trust and safety; and to value, support, and invest in our employees.​

Recruitment Timeline​​

December 2024: City of Phoenix retained executive search firm, Police Executive Research Forum to conduct a national search for the next Phoenix Police Chief.

December 2024: Community member listening sessions were held to gather input from business and community leaders, neighborhood groups, and other key stakeholders on what they think are important characteristics of the new Phoenix Police Chief. 

December 2024: Labor group listening sessions were held to gather input from elected employee representatives on what they feel will be important characteristics for the next Phoenix Police Chief.

January 2025: National recruitment begins 

February-March 2025: Semi-finalist interviews will be conducted.

March 2025: Finalists, including names, photographs, and short biographies, will be announced publicly.

March 2025: Finalist interviews

March 19, 2025:  Finalists Forum will be open to the public. Finalists will be asked moderated questions created based on community member/labor feedback and questions from the public. The public will be able to submit questions online and in-person. The event will be held at the Phoenix City Council Chambers. It will also air on PHXTV and YouTube. During the forum, the candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community and answer as many questions as possible in a moderated setting.​ Anticipated topics include continuous improvement, DOJ investigation, excellence in hiring, building bridges within the community, and leadership among other topics.

 June 2016: Finalists Forum

Police Chief Finalist ForumWatch Finalists Forum video on Youtube.  Residents interested in the Phoenix Police Chief hiring had a unique opportunity to contribute to the selection process, first-hand, at a public forum for final-round candidates. Successful finalists for the chief position participated in an open meeting that included questions from the public.

Residents asked questions and met the chief finalists at a moderated public forum on Monday, June 6, in the Phoenix City Council Chambers. During the forum the candidates had an opportunity to introduce themselves to the community and then answer as many questions as possible in a moderated setting.  Learn more about the meeting.

November 2015 – Seven community meetings were held to get input from business and community leaders, neighborhood groups and other key stakeholders on what they think are important traits for the new Phoenix Police Chief. In addition, a community survey was conducted to gather input from the community on the skills and attributes most desired in the next leader of the Phoenix Police Department. ​Read News Release

June 6, 2016:  Finalists Forum. More than 300 people attended the moderated forum. The three finalists discussed police body cameras,  diversity in hiring, building bridges within the community and leadership among other topics.
