Project Update Notice - May 2024About the Project

A future paving project along Butler Drive between 7th Street and 12th Street provides an opportunity for the Phoenix Street Transportation Department to review restriping options that would better accommodate the needs of all roadway users.

The number of travel lanes will remain the same, but proposed options would narrow the lanes and remove parking to add bike lanes or buffered bike lanes where they don't currently exist.

Bike lanes add space between people driving and people walking or biking for increased protection from vehicles, improved safety and added comfort. Additionally, the visual narrowing of the lane widths to accommodate bike lanes will help guide vehicles and deter speeding.

Pavement maintenance (new asphalt) is scheduled for summer/fall 2024, and restriping would happen shortly after paving was completed.

Proposed Changes

The department is proposing the following for this corridor:

  • Option A: No change - one driving lane in each direction and on-street parking on both sides of the roadway
  • Option B: One driving lane in each direction, with a bike lane on both sides of the roadway and on-street parking on the north side of the street only
  • Option C: One driving lane in each direction, with buffered bike lanes on both sides of the roadway and no on-street parking

Community Engagement

The video recording of the virtual public meeting viewable above was hosted via Webex on March 27, 2024 at 6 p.m., to discuss the project and proposed changes. An online survey for community members to provide input about the project was available in English and Spanish from March 27 to April 21, 2024. Thank you to those who participatein the public meeting and survey.
