    HVAC and Building​ Equipmen​t Operator (BEO) I Apprentice ​​​

    Overview

    As an HVAC/Building Equipment Operator (BEO) Apprentice, you will learn to maintain, repair, and install heating and air conditioning systems and components. Assignments are routine at the beginning of the program. As your knowledge and skill increase, the complexity of assignments increases until performance and technical ability are at the journey level. Participation in the program requires attending day or evening classes.

    Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training of 8,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours and a minimum of 576 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as a BEO I apprentice. After successful completion of all requirements, apprentices will be promoted to the BEO I classification and complete a 12-month probationary period.

    Salary

    • $22.61 / hour starting wage
    • $23.74 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours  
    • $24.93 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours 
    • $26.18 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours
    • $27.49 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours  
    • $28.86 / hour after 5,000 OJT hours
    • $30.31 / hour after 6,000 OJT hours  
    • $31.82 / hour after 7,000 OJT hours
    • $33.41 / hour after 8,000 OJT hours  
    • Starting Pay Upon Graduation: $69,493

    On-the-Job Training Includes

    • Rotating yearly between the Aviation and Public Works Departments
    • Completing All Required Building Equipment Operator I Apprenticeship Transition to a Dedicated Training Assignment 
    • Graduating from the BEO I Apprenticeship Program 
    • Earning a State of Arizona Completion Certificate 
    • Earning a Department of Labor Completion Certificate 
    • Promoting to Building Equipment Operator​ I

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must have High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire.  
    • Must successfully pass an Apprentice Aptitude Test with an 80% score or better. 
    • Ability to: 
      • Read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class. 
      • Perceive the full range of the color spectrum.  
      • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
      • Work at heights greater than 10 feet.
      • Work irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.  
      • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.   
      • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

    Aviation Employment Disqualifiers are not all-inclusive but contain TSA general factors for disqualification of employment for working at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Other factors may also be assessed that may lead to disqualification. Qualified candidates should consider these factors when applying.
